The technical problem
Promotional gadget and merchandising manufacturers operate in a highly competitive market, where product differentiation is a commercial requirement before being a technical one. A textile or cord bracelet – one of the most widespread promotional formats for events, product launches and brand awareness campaigns – is intrinsically an object with low perceived value if limited to its physical function.
The integration of a fragrance represents a conceptually simple but technically complex solution: applying a scent to a textile support in such a way that it is stable, long-lasting and perceptible over time, without degrading during the manufacturing process or the useful life of the product.
The technical challenge on three levels:
-
Stability of the fragrance on the textile substrate
Ensuring that the fragrance adheres stably to the fibre - cord, synthetic or natural yarn - without dispersing rapidly into the environment or degrading during the production process. -
Olfactory duration compatible with the working life of the product
A promotional item is worn for days or weeks. The fragrance must be perceptible for the entire duration of use, overcoming the limit of free fragrances that evaporate within a few hours. -
Compatibility with the production process
The solution must integrate into the yarn or cord treatment processes already in use - immersion or coating - without requiring dedicated equipment or modifications to the production line.
Analysis of microencapsulation options
During the technical assessment, IPS analysed the microencapsulation solutions for textile finishing applicable to this type of product, identifying Microgel as the most suitable technical solution.
Microgel has in fact presented the decisive technical advantages for this application:
-
Ultrafine particle size
Smaller than 10 µm, it ensures fine penetration and homogeneous distribution on cord and thin yarn without altering its surface appearance, softness or flexibility. -
Gel formulation
Directly compatible with the immersion and coating processes already in use, without the need for adaptations to existing equipment. -
Immediate and intense olfactory response:
Unlike microcapsules with a membrane, in Microgel the active ingredient is not retained by a polymer shell. Contact with the skin during the use of the bracelet ensures an intense initial olfactory response, amplified by the evaporative action of the alcohol present in the formulation and by body heat. -
Vegan friendly formulation
Absence of components of animal origin - no gelatin - particularly relevant for brands with clean label positioning or oriented towards sustainability.
The technology: Microgel by IPS
Microgel by IPS is a hydroalcoholic formulation with acidic pH in which microparticles of lipophilic active ingredient – in this case fragrances and essential oils – are dispersed in a gel matrix without a coating membrane. Unlike traditional microencapsulated systems with a core-shell structure, the fragrance droplets are stabilised directly in the hydroalcoholic matrix.
The ultrafine particle size – smaller than 10 µm – is the critical technical parameter for this application: it allows homogeneous distribution and fine penetration on any type of fibre, from synthetic yarn to natural cord, without altering its physical properties. For further details, see the microencapsulation technology.
Technical parameters relevant to this application:
| Value | |
|---|---|
| Physical form | Hydroalcoholic gel with acidic pH |
| Microparticle size | < 10 µm |
| Structure | Without membrane - no polymer shell |
| Applicable active ingredients | Lipophilic fragrances and essential oils |

| Application process | Immersion or coating on the yarn/cord |
The application process
Microgel is applied to the yarn or cord through immersion or coating – standard processes in the treatment of textile materials – without the need for dedicated equipment. Integration into the existing production line is immediate.
During the application process, the Microgel microparticles are deposited homogeneously on the surface of the fibre.
Once dry, the treated yarn or cord keeps the fragrance microparticles stably anchored. During the use of the bracelet, body heat and contact with the skin favour the gradual and continuous release of the fragrance.
Schematic overview of the process
- Preparation of the treatment bath with Microgel by IPS and the selected fragrance
- Immersion or coating of the yarn/cord in the bath
- Homogeneous deposition of the microparticles on the fibre (< 10 µm)
- Drying with standard process
- Bracelet processing and assembly with standard process
- Finished product: promotional bracelet with microencapsulated fragrance and gradual release
Results and benefits
-
Longer olfactory duration
The stabilisation of the microparticles in the hydroalcoholic matrix and their adhesion to the fibre ensure a fragrance perceptible throughout the entire duration of use of the bracelet - days or weeks - incomparably longer than a fragrance applied in free form. -
Immediate olfactory response
Contact with the skin during use immediately activates the fragrance, amplified by body heat, creating a distinctive sensory experience for those wearing the bracelet. -
Homogeneous distribution on the fibre
The ultrafine particle size (< 10 µm) ensures uniform deposition over the entire surface of the yarn or cord, without agglomerates or visible or tactile irregularities. -
Unchanged physical properties of the material
The softness, flexibility and surface appearance of the yarn or cord are not compromised by the treatment. -
Immediate compatibility with the production line
No modifications to existing equipment - Microgel integrates into the immersion or coating processes already in use. -
Vegan friendly formulation
Absence of components of animal origin, consistent with the positioning requirements of brands oriented towards sustainability and clean label.
Target sector and related applications
This application falls within the field of functional textile finishing with microencapsulation, with a specific application in the sensory merchandising and experiential marketing sector – an area in which the olfactory component adds perceived value and memorability to the promotional product.
Related applications developed by IPS in the same area include women’s tights with microencapsulated fragrance for functional finishing during the colouring stage, scented labels with Capsular Ink for sensory packaging and promotional campaigns, and scented postcards and cards for advertising and educational use.
To assess the technical feasibility of new applications in the merchandising and promotional items sector, IPS offers a structured development and prototyping service: fragrance analysis, compatibility verification with the application process, tests on the textile support and optimisation through to industrialisation.

FAQ — Textile finishing with Microgel on cord and yarn for scented bracelets
What makes Microgel suitable for the treatment of cord and yarn for promotional bracelets?
Microgel has a microparticle size smaller than 10 µm, which ensures fine penetration and homogeneous distribution on cord and thin yarn without altering surface appearance, softness and flexibility. The hydroalcoholic gel formulation is also directly compatible with the immersion and coating processes already in use in the treatment of textile materials.
How is Microgel applied in the manufacturing process of textile bracelets?
Microgel is applied to the yarn or cord through immersion or coating - standard processes in textile finishing - without the need for dedicated equipment or modifications to the production line. The microparticles are deposited homogeneously on the surface of the fibre; after standard drying, the treated yarn is ready for the processing and assembly of the bracelet.
How long does the fragrance last on a promotional bracelet treated with Microgel?
The fragrance is perceptible throughout the entire duration of use of the bracelet - days or weeks - incomparably longer than a fragrance applied in free form. Body heat and contact with the skin activate the gradual and continuous release of the fragrance, with an intense initial olfactory response amplified by the evaporative action of the alcohol present in the formulation.
Does Microgel alter the physical properties of the yarn or cord?
Which fragrances can be applied to promotional bracelets with Microgel?
IPS has an extensive library of fragrances tested and validated for microencapsulation in Microgel: floral, fruity, woody, fresh, gourmand. It is also possible to microencapsulate fragrances supplied directly by the customer, subject to compatibility verification through the new projects development service. The formulation is also vegan friendly, with no components of animal origin.
